Make it safe
Stop adding water
No faucet, no dishwasher, no disposal. Tell everyone in the house.
Cut power to the disposal
Switch it off; unplug it under the sink if you can reach the plug safely.
Check other drains
If a tub, shower or toilet is backing up, stop all water use and keep people away from sewage.
Deal with leaks
If water is leaking under the sink, close the sink valves or the main shutoff and mop up.
Clear the work area
- Empty the cabinet under the sink.
- Lay towels or a tarp on the cabinet floor and the floor in front.
- Clear the counter beside the sink.
- Move pets and small children to another room.
- Unlock the side gate if the cleanout is outside.
Have answers ready
- Which basin backed up first, and when did it start?
- Did the dishwasher or disposal run just before?
- Have any other drains acted up?
- Was any chemical poured in, and which product?
- How old is the house, and has the kitchen been remodeled?
- Where is the outdoor cleanout, if you know?
Have these on hand
- Your symptom log
- If you kept one
- Shutoff map
- So the plumber knows where the valves are
- Past invoices
- Any earlier drain work on this line
- Contractor details
- License number already checked at cslb.ca.gov
Why this speeds things up
A plumber who walks into a cleared cabinet, a dry floor and a clear description can usually decide on a method within minutes. Missing details, such as a forgotten drain opener or an unnoticed tub backup, are what turn a simple visit into a long one.
Common questions
Should I try to bail out the sink?
If it is plain kitchen water and no chemicals were used, bailing into a bucket is fine and makes the plumber's job easier.
Can I keep using the bathroom while I wait?
If only the kitchen is affected, usually yes. If any other drain is backing up, stop all water use.
Do I need to be home?
Someone should be there to answer questions, approve the price and test the drain afterward.
