What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license in California?

Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The lookup shows the business name, license classification and status.

Will clearing the clog damage my old pipes?

Ask what tool and cutting head will be used and how the plumber handles older cast-iron or galvanized drain lines. A careful plumber should explain the risk before starting.

What if they say I need a camera inspection?

Ask why. A camera makes sense for repeat clogs, signs of a main line problem or suspected broken pipe. Ask to see the footage and get the findings in writing.

What if they recommend replacing pipe?

Ask to see what shows the pipe is failing, what section would be replaced, and for a written scope and price. For a larger job, getting a second opinion from another licensed plumber is reasonable.

Who is responsible if the clog is in the sewer lateral?

Responsibility for the line from the house to the public sewer varies. Check with the City of Fullerton before assuming who handles which section.

How do I compare prices?

Ask each company for its price or pricing method in writing before work starts, including what happens if the first method does not clear the line.
