Before you start

Plunger type
A flat-bottom cup plunger seals best on a sink
Water level
A few inches of water over the drain, enough to cover the cup
Seal first
Second basin, overflow if your sink has one, dishwasher hose
Do not plunge if
A chemical drain opener is in the sink

Step by step

  1. Turn off the disposal

Switch it off at the wall before your hands are near the sink.

  2. Seal the other openings

Plug the second basin with a stopper or a wet rag held down by a helper. If you can reach it, pinch or clamp the dishwasher drain hose so the pressure does not push water into the dishwasher.

  3. Set the water level

Leave or add enough water to cover the plunger cup. Water pushes better than air.

  4. Seat the cup

Center it over the drain on the clogged side and press gently to push out air.

  5. Plunge steadily

Use firm, straight up-and-down strokes for about twenty seconds, keeping the seal. Then pull up sharply.

  6. Check and repeat

If the water drops, run warm water for a minute. If not, try two or three more rounds before stopping.

Why sealing matters

A plunger works by pushing a pulse of water against the blockage. In a double sink, the second basin is wide open to the same trap, so an unsealed plunge just shoves water up the other side. The dishwasher hose is a second escape route; without clamping it, dirty sink water can be pushed back toward the dishwasher.

A tight seal means the pressure has only one way to go: down the drain, against the plug of grease or food.

After plunging

  • IfThe sink drains freelyThenRun water for a minute, then run the disposal and a dishwasher rinse to confirm.
  • IfIt drains slowlyThenThe clog may be partly cleared; open the trap or call before it closes again.
  • IfNothing changes after a few roundsThenThe clog is likely past the trap; a cable is the next step.
  • IfAnother drain in the house risesThenStop. This points to the main line.

Common questions

Can I use a toilet plunger on the kitchen sink?

A flanged toilet plunger does not seal well on a flat sink. Use a flat cup plunger, and keep separate plungers for toilets and kitchens for hygiene.

Will plunging damage my disposal?

Plunging the disposal side with the power off is generally fine. Do not run the disposal while plunging.

Why did water come out of the dishwasher air gap while plunging?

The pressure found the dishwasher connection. Clamp the hose or block the air gap opening next time, and clean up any water on the counter.
