What a sewer camera is
A drain camera is a small waterproof camera on a flexible push rod. The plumber feeds it into the line through a cleanout or an opening near the sink and watches the video on a screen. Many systems also have a locator that marks on the floor or ground where the camera head is, which helps find a problem spot under a slab.
For a kitchen line, the camera is most useful after a clog has been cleared, because standing water and grease can hide the pipe. It answers the question a cable cannot: why does this keep happening?
Is a camera worth it?
- IfFirst clog in years, cleared easilyThenProbably not needed yet.
- IfThe same sink clogs every few monthsThenA camera can show grease, scale or a sag that keeps catching debris.
- IfThe cable came back with roots, mud or pipe fragmentsThenYes; something is wrong with the pipe itself.
- IfYou are planning a kitchen remodelThenWorth considering before new cabinets and floors go in.
- IfSeveral drains are involvedThenThe main line and lateral may need inspecting too.
Things you may see on the video
- Belly or sag
- A low spot where water and debris collect instead of flowing.
- Scale or tuberculation
- Rough mineral and rust buildup inside older metal pipe.
- Offset joint
- Two pipe sections that no longer line up, creating a ledge.
- Crack or break
- Damage that can let water out and soil or roots in.
- Grease buildup
- A smooth or lumpy coating narrowing the pipe.
Getting the most from the inspection
- Ask to watch the screen while the camera runs.
- Ask for a copy of the video and a written summary of findings.
- Ask where each problem is, by distance from the access point.
- If a repair is recommended, ask which section and why that section.
- For a large repair, consider a second opinion from another licensed plumber using the same video.
Common questions
Can a camera find a problem under my slab?
It can show the problem inside the pipe, and a locator can mark its approximate position on the floor above. Exact depth and access still need the plumber's judgment.
Does a camera inspection fix anything?
No. It is a diagnostic step. Its value is in choosing the right repair, or avoiding one that is not needed.
Should I keep the video?
Yes. It is useful for comparing quotes, for future plumbers and for any later work on the kitchen.
