Why there is no single price

Two kitchen sinks that look equally stopped can be very different jobs. One is a packed trap cleared in minutes. The other is a grease plug behind a corroded trap arm in a slab home, where the first cable run does not reach and the line needs jetting and a camera.

Companies also price differently. Some use a flat rate per task, others charge by time plus materials, and some add charges for after-hours visits. None of these is wrong, but you should know which one applies before work starts.

Factors that change the cost

FactorWhy it matters
Where the clog isA trap clog is quicker than one deep in the branch line or main
AccessA usable cleanout is easier than removing a trap arm or a disposal
Pipe age and materialCorroded fittings may need replacing to get in safely
MethodCable, jetting and camera are separate tools and often separate charges
TimingEvening, weekend or holiday calls may be priced differently
Repairs foundA cracked trap arm or failing section is extra work beyond clearing
Cleanup and protectionStanding water or chemicals in the sink add time

Ways to keep the job simple

  • Call while the sink is slow rather than fully stopped, if you can.
  • Do not pour chemicals in first; they complicate and slow the work.
  • Clear the sink cabinet before the plumber arrives.
  • Know where your outdoor cleanout is, if you have one.
  • Describe all symptoms, including other drains, so the right tools come on the first visit.

Getting a clear price

  1. Ask how they price

Flat rate, hourly or a diagnostic fee first. Ask what is included.

  2. Get it in writing

Before work starts, get the price or pricing method and the scope in writing.

  3. Agree on a stop point

Ask what happens if the first method does not clear the line, and get approval needed before any added work.

  4. Separate clearing from repair

If a repair is found, ask for it as its own written estimate.

Common questions

Is a camera inspection always an extra charge?

Often, but not always. Ask in advance whether it is included and whether you get the video.

Why would a plumber charge to come out and look?

Some companies charge a diagnostic or trip fee and then quote the work. Ask whether that fee is credited toward the job.

Should I get more than one quote?

For a simple clog, timing usually matters more. For pipe replacement or larger repairs, comparing written quotes from licensed plumbers is reasonable.
