How to use this map

Walk the house with a flashlight and this page printed out. For each valve, write where it is in words someone else would understand, such as 'left of the garage door, behind the recycling bin', and note what kind of handle it has. Then test each one gently.

Keep a copy inside a kitchen cabinet door and a photo on your phone. If you rent the house out or have a sitter, give them a copy too.

Testing each valve safely

  1. Turn slowly

Old valves can be stiff. Use hand pressure first, not a wrench.

  2. Confirm it works

With the valve closed, open the fixture. Water should stop or slow to nothing.

  3. Reopen fully

Turn it back all the way so the fixture has full flow.

  4. Check for drips

A small drip at the stem after turning is common on older valves. Note it on the map.

  5. Mark failures

Any valve that will not close or leaks badly goes on a list for a plumber's next routine visit.

Common questions

What if a fixture has no shutoff valve?

Note it. In an emergency at that fixture you will need the main. A plumber can add a valve during routine work.

Should I test the curb valve at the meter?

That valve is part of the city's water system. Leave it to the utility unless you are told otherwise.

How often should I redo the map?

Update it after any plumbing work, a remodel or a water heater replacement.
