A five-minute check
Ask for the CSLB license number
California contractors are licensed by the Contractors State License Board. A licensed contractor should give you the number without hesitation.
Look it up at cslb.ca.gov
Confirm the business name matches, the license is active and the classification covers plumbing.
Ask who will show up
Is it an employee of the licensed business or a subcontractor, and is the worker covered by the company's insurance?
Ask how pricing works
Visit or diagnostic fee, after-hours rates, flat price or time and materials.
Agree on the scope in writing
Before work starts, get the scope and price, or pricing method, in writing or by text or email.
Red flags
Why this matters more in an emergency
Emergency calls happen when people are stressed and want the problem gone. That is exactly when it is easiest to skip questions. A legitimate contractor expects them and will not be put off.

Common questions
Do plumbers in California need a license?
Contractors doing plumbing work generally need a CSLB license with the right classification. Check the details for any contractor at cslb.ca.gov.
What if the license lookup shows a different name?
Ask why. The person may work for a licensed company, but you should know whose license covers your job.
Can I verify a license from my phone?
Yes. The CSLB lookup at cslb.ca.gov works on a phone browser.
