What to ask, and why
How do I check a plumber's license?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Check that the name matches, the license is active, and it covers plumbing work.
How can I avoid surprises on an after-hours bill?
Before anyone arrives, ask how the visit or diagnostic fee works, whether after-hours rates apply, and get the repair price in writing before work starts.
Who will actually do the work?
Ask whether the person arriving is an employee of the licensed contractor or a subcontractor, and whose license and insurance cover the job.
Do I need a permit for an emergency repair?
Some work, such as water heater replacement or repiping, may need one. Rules change, so check with the city of Fullerton or ask the contractor who will pull it.
What should I keep for insurance?
Photos and video of the damage and the failed part, the written invoice, and any notes on what caused the leak. Ask the plumber to keep the failed part if your insurer may want to see it.
Someone is pushing a full replacement tonight. What should I do?
If the water is off and the home is safe, it is reasonable to ask for a temporary fix now and a written estimate for the larger job, then get a second opinion.
