Start with the license
In California, contractors who do plumbing work are licensed by the Contractors State License Board. Ask any plumber for their CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The lookup shows whether the license is active, its classification, and bond and workers' compensation information. Make sure the name on the license matches the company you are dealing with.
For a business, the license check is the floor, not the ceiling. You also want a contractor who works in commercial settings, understands grease interceptors, backflow and kitchen schedules, and will put the scope in writing before work starts.
Vetting checklist
Comparing written scopes
| Look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact location and length of work | Vague scopes make it hard to tell if two quotes cover the same pipe. |
| Method | Snaking versus jetting, or lining versus open cut, are very different jobs. |
| What is excluded | Floor, paving or wall restoration is often excluded unless stated. |
| Permits and inspections | Shows who is responsible for them. |
| Shutdown window | Tells you how long the kitchen or suite will be out of service. |
| Cleanup and debris | Clarifies who handles waste and site cleanup. |

Common questions
How do I check a plumber's license in California?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Confirm the license is active and the business name matches.
Should I get more than one quote?
For larger jobs such as lateral replacement or a water heater swap, a second written quote is reasonable. Make sure both describe the same scope.
Is a handyman allowed to do commercial plumbing?
California has limits on unlicensed work. For commercial plumbing and any gas work, use a licensed contractor and verify the license at cslb.ca.gov.
