A backflow test is short when the device is easy to reach and everyone knows the water will be off for a while. It drags on when the tester has to dig out a valve box, hunt for a key or wait while someone finishes a load of laundry.
This checklist is split into the day before, the morning of and after the tester leaves. Print it and tick the boxes.
The day before
- Confirm the appointment window and the tester's name.
- Find the device and trim plants back so all test cocks are reachable.
- Pull mulch, gravel or soil off any valve box lid.
- Find the key or combination for any cage or enclosure.
- Put the irrigation controller on rain delay if the sprinkler device is being tested.
- Put the notice and last year's report where you can grab them.
The morning of
- Tell everyone at home or at work that water downstream of the device will be off briefly.
- At a business, hold off on dishwashing, ice making or other water-heavy tasks during the test.
- Keep pets and children away from the work area and open boxes.
- Have photos of any leaks or spitting you have noticed.
While the tester is there
Point out the device and notice
Make sure the device being tested matches the ID on the notice.
Mention any symptoms
Dripping, spitting or low pressure helps the tester know what to watch for.
Ask to see the readings
You do not need to understand the gauge, but you should see the numbers that go on the report.
Approve any repair in writing
If the device fails, get the scope and price before parts are installed.
After the tester leaves
- Run a tap or sprinkler zone to clear air and check pressure is normal.
- Look at the device for new drips or leaks.
- Confirm when and how the report will be filed with the city.
- Save your copy of the report and update your record card.
- Turn the irrigation controller back on.
Common questions
How long will the water be off?
It depends on the device and whether repairs are needed. Ask the tester when you book.
Should I flush the sprinklers before the test?
No need. Just make sure they are not scheduled to run during the visit.
What if the tester cannot reach the device?
The test may be marked incomplete. Fix the access issue and rebook before the deadline.
