What to ask, and why
How do I check a contractor's license?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Tester certification is separate, so ask about both.
Will the test shut off my water?
Water downstream of the device is off briefly during the test. Ask how long, especially for a business.
What if I miss the deadline on my notice?
Contact the city's water utility directly. Consequences and extensions are set locally, so do not rely on a contractor's guess.
Can I replace the device with a cheaper type?
Only with the water supplier's approval. The required type depends on the hazard behind the connection, so ask the city before anyone swaps it.
Should I get a written price first?
Yes. Get the test price, what it includes and any repair or replacement price in writing before work starts.
Who will actually do the work?
Ask whether employees or subcontractors will test or repair the device, and get their names and license or certification details.
