For an active backup there is usually no time to collect several estimates. This worksheet is most useful for the next decision: a recommended jetting, a lateral repair, a liner, or a replacement after a camera inspection. Those are larger jobs, and the scope matters as much as the price.

Fill in one column per contractor. Where an estimate is silent on an item, write 'not stated' and ask. A blank is information too.

Clearing vs. repair estimates

Clearing estimate

  • Defined by line, access point and method
  • Should say what happens if the line will not clear
  • Camera may be separate or included

Repair estimate

  • Defined by exact section, length and method
  • Should address permit, inspection and restoration
  • Should be based on footage you have seen

Using the worksheet

  1. Fill every row.Copy details straight from each written estimate.
  2. Mark the gaps.Circle any 'not stated' items and ask each contractor to answer in writing.
  3. Compare like with like.If one estimate covers 20 feet of pipe and another the whole lateral, they are not the same job.
  4. Decide on scope first.Choose the scope you want, then compare prices for that scope.

Questions that clear up differences

  1. Why did you recommend this method instead of another?
  2. Does your price include restoring the yard or floor?
  3. Is the permit fee included?
  4. What would make the final price differ from this estimate?

Common questions

How many estimates should I get?

For a significant repair, two or three is common. For an urgent clog, one well-vetted contractor is often enough.

Can I share one contractor's footage with another?

Yes, if you have a copy. It lets the second contractor give an informed opinion.

Should I choose the lowest total?

Only after confirming the scopes match. Differences in what is included often explain the gap.
