If the bowl is about to overflow

  1. Close the supply valve. The oval handle on the wall behind the toilet turns clockwise to stop the tank refilling. If it is stuck, lift the tank lid and raise the float to stop the fill.
  2. Do not flush again.A second flush adds a full tank of water to a bowl that cannot drain.
  3. Protect the floor.Lay towels around the base. If water is spreading toward carpet or into another room, close the main water shutoff.
  4. Check the other drains.Run a little water in the nearest tub or sink. If it backs up or gurgles, the clog is probably in the main line, not the toilet.

Plunging the right way

Toilets need a flange plunger, the kind with a soft extension that seals into the drain opening. A flat cup plunger made for sinks loses its seal in a toilet bowl and mostly splashes. Make sure the plunger is covered with water, press down slowly to push the air out, then work it with firm, steady strokes and pull up sharply. A dozen or so strokes is usually enough to tell whether it is working.

If an object such as a toy, a phone or a bottle cap went down, plunging can push it deeper into the trapway or the line. In that case a closet auger, which is designed to pass through a toilet without scratching the bowl, is the better tool, or a plumber may pull the toilet to retrieve it.

Plunge, auger or call

  • IfOnly this toilet is slow and you know it was too much paperThenPlunge with a flange plunger.
  • IfPlunging has not worked after a few triesThenTry a closet auger, or call a plumber.
  • IfSomething solid went downThenSkip plunging and use a closet auger or call; the toilet may need to come off.
  • IfOther fixtures gurgle or back upThenCall for main-line cleaning. Plunging the toilet will not reach it.
  • IfWater is leaking around the base when it flushesThenThe wax seal may have failed; the toilet needs to be reset.

Preventing repeat toilet clogs

Common questions

Are flushable wipes safe for my drains?

They often do not break down the way toilet paper does and can snag in older or rough lines. Putting them in the trash is safer for any home's plumbing.

Why does my toilet clog every week?

It may have something partly stuck in the trapway, a weak flush, or a restriction further down the line. A plumber can check which one it is.

Can a plumber clear the main line through a toilet?

Sometimes, by pulling the toilet and running a cable through the flange, especially when there is no accessible cleanout.
