Bathroom drains collect a mix that kitchens do not: hair, soap, toothpaste, shaving residue and the minerals left by hard water. Soap scum binds hair into a mat that catches on the pop-up stopper rod in a sink or the crossbars of a tub strainer. The water keeps draining, just more slowly each week, until one day it stands.
Cypress water is hard, a blend of local groundwater and imported water, and the scale it leaves makes the inside of drains rougher over time. That does not cause clogs on its own, but it gives hair and soap more to grip.
Where bathroom clogs usually are
| Fixture | Most common spot | How it is reached |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom sink | Pop-up stopper and its pivot rod, then the P-trap | Lift out the stopper; open the trap with a bucket below |
| Bathtub | Strainer or trip-lever stopper, then the drum or P-trap below the floor | Remove the strainer or overflow plate; hand auger |
| Walk-in shower | Hair under the grate and in the trap below it | Lift the grate; hand auger through the drain |
| Two fixtures together | Shared branch line under the floor | Plumber cables from a fixture or branch cleanout |
Clearing a slow bathroom drain
- Pull the stopper or strainer.Sink pop-ups usually lift straight out or come free after loosening the pivot nut behind the drain. Tub strainers often unscrew. Pull out hair with gloves or a plastic drain tool.
- Plunge with the overflow covered.Sinks and tubs have an overflow opening. Cover it with a wet cloth so the plunger's pressure goes into the drain, not out the overflow.
- Try a small hand auger.A short hand auger can reach the trap. Feed it gently; forcing it can scratch a finish or kink in the trap.
- Run water and watch.Fill the basin partway and let it drain. If it empties quickly, the clog is cleared. If it slows again within days, the restriction is probably further down.
When to stop and call
- IfThe drain is slow again within a week of cleaning the stopperThenThe clog is past the trap. A plumber can cable the branch line.
- IfThe trap fittings are corroded, cracked or will not loosenThenLeave them. Forcing old fittings can break the trap arm inside the wall.
- IfThe tub drains into an old drum trap under the floorThenThese are hard to clear from above; a plumber may need to access it differently.
- IfWater appears on the floor or ceiling belowThenStop using the fixture. A drain leak needs to be found and repaired.

Common questions
Why does only my shower drain slowly?
Usually hair and soap in the shower trap or under the grate. If the shower also backs up when you flush a toilet, the problem is the main line instead.
Are plastic drain tools safe?
Barbed plastic strips are generally gentle on fixtures and reach hair just below the stopper. They will not reach a clog deeper in the line.
Do I need a plumber for a slow sink?
Often not, if cleaning the stopper and trap fixes it. Call if it returns quickly, fittings are corroded, or other drains are affected.
