How the problem built up

First backup
The tub fills when a toilet is flushed. The main line is cabled through the front-yard cleanout and roots come out on the cutter.
Some months later
Toilets gurgle and drains slow throughout the house. The line is cabled again with the same result.
Third time
The household asks for a camera inspection after the line is cleared.
After the inspection
With footage in hand, they compare options.

What the camera showed

In this example, the camera travels from the cleanout toward the street. The pipe is clay, laid in short sections. Fine root growth is visible at several joints, with the heaviest growth at a joint roughly beneath a large tree in the front yard. One joint is slightly offset, forming a small ledge.

Between the problem joints, the clay looks intact: no visible cracks, breaks or sags. That matters, because it opens up options that depend on the pipe still holding its shape.

The two paths considered

Keep maintaining

  • Periodic cleaning to cut roots back
  • No construction now
  • Roots will keep returning through open joints
  • Backup risk remains between cleanings

Repair the affected section or the lateral

  • Lining or replacement can seal or remove the joints
  • Larger one-time project, likely with a permit
  • Ends the root cycle in the treated section
  • Need to confirm responsibility near the street with the city

Questions the household asked

  1. Are the roots concentrated in one section or spread through the whole lateral?
  2. Is the pipe a candidate for lining, given the offset joint?
  3. Would a repair need a permit, and who obtains it?
  4. Is any of this near the street, and whose responsibility is that part?
  5. Can we have the footage to get a second opinion?

What they did in the meantime

Common questions

Is this based on a real home?

No. It is an invented example of a common situation.

Would removing the tree solve it?

Not by itself. Roots already in the pipe remain, and other trees can find the same joints. Street trees may also belong to the city.

How was the decision made?

In the example, by comparing the cost and disruption of repeat cleanings against a one-time repair, using the camera footage as evidence.
