A sensible order to try things

  1. Clean what you can see.Remove the stopper, strainer or grate and pull out hair and debris.
  2. Plunge properly.Cover the plunger with a little water, seal the overflow, and use steady strokes before pulling up sharply.
  3. Open the trap.On a sink, put a bucket under the P-trap, loosen the slip nuts by hand if possible, and clean out the trap.
  4. Try a hand auger.Feed the cable into the trap arm or drain, turning slowly. Pull it back and clean it once you feel it catch.
  5. Test and stop.Run water. If it still drains slowly, the clog is further down than these tools reach.

Mechanical clearing vs. chemical openers

Plunger and auger

  • Removes or breaks up the clog directly
  • No chemical left in the pipe or the basin
  • You can tell whether it worked
  • Safe for whoever works on the drain next

Chemical drain opener

  • Often sits on top of the clog in standing water
  • Can splash or bubble back out of the drain
  • Can be hard on older pipe, trap seals and finishes
  • Leaves a hazard for a plumber who has to open the line

Where most people should stop

Renting a large drain machine for a main line is a different job from clearing a sink. Motorized cables can kink, whip and catch on roots or broken pipe, and they can injure hands and wrists. A cable stuck in an old lateral turns an ordinary clog into a bigger repair.

If the clog is beyond the trap, keeps coming back, or involves more than one fixture, that is the point to hand it to a licensed plumber whose license you have checked at cslb.ca.gov.

Common questions

Does baking soda and vinegar clear clogs?

It fizzes and may help freshen a slightly slow drain, but it does not have the force to clear a real clog. A plunger or auger is more effective.

Can I rent a drain snake for the main line?

You can, but motorized machines carry real injury and pipe-damage risks. For a main line, especially an older one, a plumber is the safer choice.

Why did plunging make it worse?

If the clog is in the main line, plunging one fixture can push water and debris out another. Stop and check whether other drains are affected.
