How the test works

When nothing in the house is using water, the meter should not move. If it does, water is going somewhere: a running toilet, a dripping irrigation valve, a leak in the line from the meter, or a leak under the slab. By closing valves in a set order and reading the meter each time, you can narrow the search before you call anyone.

Your meter box is usually near the curb. The City of Buena Park's water utility owns the meter. Lift the lid carefully, watch for insects, and do not operate the meter valve unless you need to in an emergency.

Run the test

  1. Turn off all water use.Faucets, showers, toilets (let tanks finish filling), dishwasher, washer, ice maker, irrigation and any water softener cycle.
  2. Reading 1.Write down the meter reading and note whether the small leak indicator is turning.
  3. Wait.Leave everything off for a while, then take reading 2.
  4. Close the house main.If the meter moved, close the main shutoff at the house and take reading 3 after another wait.
  5. Check the toilets.Add a few drops of food coloring to each toilet tank. Color in the bowl without flushing means a leaking flapper.

Reading the results

  • IfMeter did not moveNo measurable leak right now. Repeat the test if the bill stays high.
  • IfMeter moved, then stopped when the house main was closedThe leak is inside the house: a fixture, a toilet, a water heater or a slab line.
  • IfMeter kept moving with the house main closedThe leak may be in the line between the meter and the house, or in irrigation.
  • IfFood coloring appeared in a bowlThat toilet's flapper or fill valve needs attention.

Common questions

How long should I wait between readings?
Long enough that a slow leak would register. Many people wait an hour or more; an overnight test with no use gives the clearest answer.
What if my meter is hard to read?
Meter faces vary. Photograph it each time and compare. The City of Buena Park's water utility can explain how to read its meters.
I found a leak. What next?
Write down your readings and call a licensed plumber. The results help them decide whether leak detection is needed.
