Find and test your main shutoff

  1. Look where the line enters the house. On many Buena Park homes, the main valve is on the pipe that rises from the ground near the front wall, often beside a hose bib. Some homes have it in the garage.
  2. Know the meter valve too.The meter box near the curb also has a valve. It is a backup if the house valve fails.
  3. Test it gently.Turn the house valve clockwise to close it, then open a faucet to confirm water stops. Turn it back on slowly.
  4. Do not force a stuck valve. An old valve that will not turn can break if forced. Have a plumber replace it before you need it in an emergency.
  5. Label it.Tag the valve so anyone in the house can find it quickly.

The line from the meter to the house

Between the city's water meter and your house is a service line that runs underground, often under the front lawn or walkway. On older Buena Park homes it may be original galvanized steel or copper. When it leaks, the first sign is often a soggy patch of lawn or a spot that stays green while the rest of the yard dries out.

The meter itself and the line on the street side belong to the city's water utility. The line from the meter to your house is usually the property owner's. If you are not sure where the boundary is, check with the City of Buena Park.

Signs of a main line problem

  • A wet or unusually green area between the meter and the house.
  • The meter keeps moving after you close the house shutoff.
  • Low pressure throughout the house.
  • Hissing sound near the meter box or where the line enters.
  • Rusty water from every fixture, which can point to old galvanized pipe.

What affects the cost of a main line repair

FactorWhy it matters
Length and depth of the lineLonger runs from the meter take more trenching or boring.
What is on topLawn is easier to restore than a concrete driveway or walkway.
Repair vs replaceA single leak in a sound line may be repairable; an aging line may be better replaced.
New shutoff valve or regulatorOften done at the same time.
PermitsCheck with the city about requirements for service line work.

What to ask the plumber

  1. What is my main line made of, and what condition is it in?
  2. Would you repair this section or replace the line?
  3. Can the line be bored under the walkway instead of trenched?
  4. Should the shutoff valve or pressure regulator be replaced too?
  5. Who coordinates with the city if the meter has to be turned off?

Common questions

What kind of valve should the main shutoff be?
Many plumbers prefer a quarter-turn ball valve because it is easy to close fully in an emergency. Ask what they recommend when replacing an old one.
Can I turn off the meter valve myself?
Meter valves often need a special key and may belong to the utility. Check with the City of Buena Park before operating it, except in a genuine emergency.
Why is my pressure low after a repair?
Debris can catch in aerators after water is shut off and turned back on. Clean them first. If pressure stays low, call the plumber back.
