The two methods side by side
Cable machine (snaking)
- A spinning steel cable with a cutting or auger head.
- Good at opening a path through a blockage or cutting roots.
- Works on most pipe materials, including older lines.
- Leaves some buildup on pipe walls.
Hydro jetting
- A hose with a nozzle that sprays high-pressure water forward and backward.
- Scours grease, scale, sludge and fine roots off the pipe walls.
- Restores more of the pipe's original opening.
- Not a good fit for pipe that is cracked, badly corroded or broken.
Why the pipe's condition matters
High-pressure water is effective because it is forceful. In a sound pipe that is exactly what you want. In a clay line with broken joints or cast iron that has corroded thin, that same force can make existing damage worse or push water into the soil around a break.
That is why many plumbers want to see the inside of an older Buena Park lateral with a camera before jetting it. If the line is in rough shape, snaking to restore flow and then discussing repair is often the more careful order.
Which method fits which problem
| Problem | Usually a fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Single soft clog in a branch line | Snaking | Often cleared from the fixture or nearest access. |
| Kitchen line coated in grease | Hydro jetting | Snaking may poke a hole that closes again. |
| Roots at the joints | Either, depending on pipe condition | Camera inspection helps decide. |
| Heavy scale in cast iron | Depends on wall thickness | Ask about the pipe's condition first. |
| Broken or collapsed section | Neither fixes it | Needs repair; clearing only restores temporary flow. |
What affects the cost
- Which method is used and how long the line is.
- Access to the line through a cleanout or not.
- Whether a camera inspection is done before or after.
- How severe the buildup or root growth is.
- Whether the work is during regular hours or after hours.
What to ask the plumber
- Why do you recommend this method for my line?
- Have you seen the inside of the pipe, or will you camera it first?
- Could jetting damage this pipe given its age and material?
- Will you run a camera afterward to show the result?
- What is the written price, and is the camera included?
Common questions
- Is hydro jetting always better?
- No. It cleans more thoroughly in a sound pipe, but for a single clog or a fragile old line, snaking may be the better choice.
- Can I rent a jetter or snake myself?
- Rental machines exist, but main line equipment can injure people and damage pipe if misused. For a main line, a licensed plumber is the safer choice.
- How often should a line be jetted?
- There is no universal schedule. It depends on what is causing buildup. Ask the plumber based on what the camera showed.
