How to use this log

One meter test is a snapshot. Several, done on different days and with different valves closed, show a pattern: whether the leak is constant, whether it is on the hot or cold side, and whether it is getting faster. Fill in one row per test and keep the sheet near the front door, close to the meter box.

Take a photo of the meter face at the start and end of each test. The photos back up your numbers and are useful later if you talk to your insurer.

Running each row

  1. Stop all use.Fixtures, appliances, ice maker, water softener and sprinklers off. Wait for toilets to finish refilling.
  2. Close the valve for this row.Only one change per row, so you know what made the difference.
  3. Record the start.Write the time and the full reading, and photograph the meter face.
  4. Wait 15 to 30 minutes.Glance at the leak indicator once or twice during the wait.
  5. Record the end.Write the time, the reading and whether the indicator moved. Reopen the valve.

Reading a full sheet

  • IfIndicator still on every rowThenNo constant leak at the moment. Try again on another day or after irrigation runs.
  • IfStops only on the toilet rowThenA toilet is the leak. Fix the flapper or fill valve, then retest.
  • IfStops only on the irrigation rowThenLook for a leaking sprinkler valve or line in the yard.
  • IfStops on the water heater rowThenA hot line leak is likely. Ask a licensed plumber for slab leak location.
  • IfMoves even on the house main rowThenThe leak is probably between the meter and the house.

Common questions

How many tests should I log?

At least the first, water heater and house main rows. More rows on different days give a clearer picture.

What if my meter is digital?

Many digital meters show a flow indicator or rate. Note whatever it displays at the start and end of each test.

Should I test at night?

Any time works if nobody uses water. Late evening is often easiest, and also a good time to listen for sounds.
