How to use it

Fill in one column per estimate, using only what is written on it. If something is not written, put a question mark and ask. A blank on the estimate usually means it is not included.

This worksheet has no prices on it and this site does not quote any. The point is to make sure each total is buying the same job.

Red flags while filling it in

  • Several lines you cannot answer from the estimate.
  • No material type named.
  • Permit marked as optional or not mentioned.
  • A large upfront payment before work starts.

Follow-up questions

  1. What could change this price after walls are opened?
  2. Who on your team will be on site each day?
  3. Can you add the missing items to the written estimate?

Common questions

How many estimates should I get?

Two or three is common for a whole-house repipe.

What if one contractor will not itemize?

That makes comparison hard. Ask again in writing, and weigh the answer.

Where do I check the license?

At cslb.ca.gov, using the license number on the estimate.
