Where old and new meet

The water heater is where cold water enters to be heated and hot water leaves for the house, so both new lines tie in there. The repipe crew will usually replace the connectors and shutoff valve at the heater as part of the job. Ask whether that is included.

If your heater is near the end of its life, replacing it at the same time can avoid reworking the new connections later. Water heater replacement typically has its own permit and requirements, so check with the city.

What to check at the heater

  • Seismic straps in place, as California requires for water heaters.
  • A working cold-water shutoff valve on the inlet.
  • A temperature and pressure relief valve with a discharge line routed properly.
  • Condition of the gas connector and venting on gas units.
  • Signs of rust, leaks or water in the drain pan.

Replace the heater now or later?

  • IfThe heater is leaking, rusted or failingThenAsk about replacing it as part of the project so the new lines connect once.
  • IfThe heater is fairly new and in good shapeThenHave the repipe connect to it and check strapping and valves.
  • IfYou are considering a tankless unitThenDiscuss it before the repipe, since location, gas and venting needs can change.

Terms at the water heater

T&P relief valve
A safety valve that opens if temperature or pressure inside the tank gets too high.
Seismic strapping
Straps that secure the tank to the wall so it does not tip in an earthquake.
Dielectric fitting
A connector that separates dissimilar metals to reduce corrosion at the joint.
Expansion tank
A small tank that absorbs the extra volume of heated water in some systems.

Questions for your plumber

  1. Are the heater connectors and shutoff valve included in the repipe?
  2. Is my strapping adequate, and will you correct it if not?
  3. Does my system need an expansion tank?
  4. Will any gas work be done, and how is it tested?

Common questions

Does a repipe include a new water heater?

Usually not unless you ask. Get a separate line item if you want it replaced at the same time.

Who checks my gas meter or supply?

For gas service questions or a suspected leak, contact SoCalGas. If you smell gas, call from outside the house.

Will the new lines be insulated at the heater?

Insulating the first few feet of hot line is common. Ask what the plan is.
