What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license?

Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Confirm it is active and that its classification covers plumbing.

Could one more spot repair do it?

Sometimes. Ask the plumber what the inside of the removed pipe looked like, and why that points to a repair or a repipe.

How many holes go in my walls?

Most repipes need some. Ask for the count, the locations, and whether texture and paint come with the patch.

How do I compare two quotes?

Line them up on material, fixture count, route, permit, patching and cleanup. A lower total that skips the permit or the paint buys a smaller job.

The leak is under the slab right now. What first?

Close the main, keep power away from anything wet, and get the leak located. A slab leak can be fixed on its own or bypassed by a repipe.

Who shows up to do the work?

Ask whether the contractor's own employees or subcontractors will be on site, and who you call during the job.
