Getting comparable quotes

  1. Describe the problem the same way.Use your symptom log so each plumber hears the same facts.
  2. Share the same access details.Tell each one whether you have an outdoor cleanout and where it is.
  3. Ask each the same questions.Method, what is included, and what triggers extra charges.
  4. Fill in every row.A blank row often hides a cost or an assumption. Ask until each is filled.

Comparing more than the bottom line

A lower number that excludes the camera, cleanup or a second access point may end up costing more than a higher, all-in quote. The worksheet makes those differences visible before you choose.

For repair quotes after an inspection, check that each one addresses the same defect at the same location. Two quotes that describe different scopes are not really comparable until you ask why they differ.

Before choosing

  • Every license number looked up at cslb.ca.gov
  • Every quote in writing
  • Repair quotes describe the same defect and location
  • Permit responsibility stated for any repair
  • You understand what happens if the first method fails

Common questions

Is a flat rate always better?

Not necessarily. A flat rate is predictable, but check what it covers and what would make it change.

How many quotes should I get?

For a routine clog, often one from a checked, licensed plumber is enough. For a large repair, two or three written quotes are reasonable.

Should the cheapest quote win?

Compare scope first. The right choice covers the problem you actually have.
