What vents do
Every drain needs air behind the water to flow smoothly. Vent pipes rise through the walls and out the roof so air can enter the system as water leaves. Without that air, draining water creates suction that pulls water out of nearby traps, and you hear it as a gurgle or see a toilet bowl level drop.
A partial clog downstream can do the same thing, because water backs up and pushes air through the nearest traps. That is why gurgling alone does not tell you which problem you have. Paying attention to when it happens narrows it down.
Reading the gurgle
- IfA toilet gurgles when the nearby sink or tub drains, and all drains are slowThenA partial clog in the shared branch or main is likely.
- IfGurgling happens but drains run at normal speedThenA restricted vent is more likely than a clog.
- IfGurgling spreads through the house and the tub fills when you flushThenTreat it as a main line blockage and stop using water.
- IfA sewer smell comes with the gurglingThenTraps may be siphoning dry. See whether a vent is blocked or a trap is losing water.
Common vent problems
- Leaves, debris or a bird nest in the roof vent opening
- A vent cap or screen damaged during roof work
- A remodel that removed or shortened a vent
- A failed mechanical air admittance valve under a sink
- Scale or corrosion narrowing an old galvanized vent pipe
What a plumber typically checks
- Test fixtures one at a time.Running each fixture and listening shows which traps react to which drains.
- Check drain speed.Slow drains point toward a clog; normal speed with gurgling points toward venting.
- Inspect the vent. From the roof, the vent opening can be checked and a cable or water run down it if it is blocked.
- Clear and recheck. After clearing a clog or vent, the same fixture test confirms whether the gurgle is gone.
Questions to ask
- Do you think this is a clog, a vent issue or both?
- Will you check the roof vent before cabling the drain?
- If a vent is missing or undersized, what would correcting it involve?
- Would vent changes need a permit from the City of Placentia?
Common questions
Is gurgling dangerous?
Gurgling itself is not, but if it is siphoning traps dry, sewer gas can enter the home, and a gurgle can be an early sign of a main line clog.
Can I pour water down the roof vent myself?
Running a hose down a vent can loosen light debris, but it involves roof work and can flood a fixture if the drain below is clogged. Use care or call a plumber.
Why did gurgling start after a remodel?
Remodels sometimes change or remove vent connections. Ask the contractor or a plumber to check that the new fixtures are vented correctly.
