The two methods side by side
Snaking (cabling)
- A rotating steel cable with a cutting or retrieval head
- Good for opening a path through a localized clog
- Can retrieve objects and sample what is in the line
- Lower risk in fragile pipe when used carefully
- Often leaves grease or scale on the pipe wall
Hydro jetting
- A hose and nozzle spraying high-pressure water backward and forward
- Good for grease, scale, sludge and fine roots along a whole run
- Leaves the pipe wall cleaner, which can slow the next clog
- Pressure and nozzle must suit the pipe size and condition
- Can worsen a pipe that is already cracked, corroded or separated
Which one usually fits
- IfOne sudden clog, such as a toy, wipes or a hair matThenA cable is usually the right first tool.
- IfA kitchen line that coats with grease every few monthsThenJetting is often suggested after the line is opened, to clean the pipe wall.
- IfRoots in a clay lateralThenA cable with a root cutter opens it; jetting may follow if a camera shows the pipe can take it.
- IfBadly corroded cast iron or a known broken sectionThenBe cautious with jetting. Ask about camera inspection and repair options first.
Why pipe condition matters in older Placentia homes
Drain and sewer lines in the city's older tracts are often cast iron or clay that has been in the ground for well over half a century. Cast iron can thin from the inside where scale and corrosion build up, and clay can have cracked bells or offset joints. A cable works around these weak spots; a powerful jet can find them.
That does not rule out jetting in older homes. It means a careful plumber looks at the line first, usually with a camera, picks a pressure and nozzle that suit the pipe, and tells you if they see a section that should be repaired rather than scoured.
What changes the scope of the job
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Access point | A clean outdoor cleanout is simpler than pulling a toilet or using a roof vent |
| Length of the run | Long laterals and under-slab lines need longer equipment and more time |
| Material in the line | Grease and scale suit jetting; objects and paper suit a cable |
| Pipe condition | Weak or broken pipe changes the method and may lead to a repair conversation |
| Camera inspection | Adds a step but shows whether the line is truly clean and intact |
Questions to ask before either method
- Why do you recommend this method for my line specifically?
- What pipe material do you expect, and have you seen its condition?
- What happens if the cable cannot get through or the jet finds a break?
- Is the price for the method itself, or does it include a camera check?
- What is your CSLB license number?
Common questions
Is hydro jetting always better than snaking?
No. Jetting cleans more thoroughly, but a cable is often the right choice for a single clog or for pipe in poor condition.
Can jetting remove tree roots?
It can scour fine roots and debris, but heavy root masses are usually cut with a cable first. Roots will regrow from open joints either way.
Does jetting need a permit?
Cleaning a line generally does not. Repairs found during the work may, so check with the City of Placentia before repair work.
