What to ask, and why
How do I check a plumber's license?
Ask for the contractor's CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The lookup shows whether the license is active and what classification it holds.
How do I avoid surprise charges for a clog?
Ask for the price or pricing method in writing before work starts, and ask what changes the price: a second access point, a larger machine, jetting, or a camera inspection.
What if I am told I need a sewer replacement?
Ask to see the camera footage and the exact location and type of damage, and get the recommendation in writing. For a large repair it is reasonable to get a second opinion from another licensed contractor.
Can hydro jetting damage an old pipe?
It can make a weak spot worse if the pipe is already broken, badly corroded or separated. Ask whether the line has been inspected with a camera before high-pressure jetting is used.
Who will actually do the work?
Ask whether the person who comes out is an employee of the licensed contractor or a subcontractor, and whose license and insurance cover the job.
Does drain cleaning need a permit?
Clearing a clog usually does not involve the kind of work that needs a permit, but repairing or replacing a sewer line may. Check with the City of Placentia before repair work begins.
