The situation
Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.
In a 1960s single-story home, the double kitchen sink drains slowly for a few weeks. One evening, after a holiday meal and a full dishwasher, both sides fill with gray water and stay full. The bathrooms drain normally.
- The homeowner stops the dishwasher and disposal and checks the bathrooms, which are fine.
- They seal one side of the sink and plunge the other. The water drops a little, then refills.
- They remove the trap into a bucket. It holds some food but is not blocked.
- With the trap clear and the sink still backing up, they decide the clog is in the branch line and call a licensed plumber after checking the CSLB license.
The problem is narrowed to the kitchen branch line before the plumber arrives, which tells them where to start.
What the plumber might do
- Confirm the scope.Run water in other fixtures to confirm only the kitchen is affected.
- Cable the branch line.Through the trap arm or a wall cleanout, using a cable sized for the kitchen line. The cable brings back soft grease and food.
- Discuss jetting.Because the line had been slowing for weeks, they might suggest jetting to scour the coating off the pipe wall, after considering the pipe's age.
- Test and explain.Run hot and cold water and the dishwasher, then explain what was found.
Why it happened
In this example, cooking fat from roasting pans and gravy went down the sink in hot water. It cooled within the first few feet of pipe, and the long run of original cast iron under the slab gave it plenty of rough surface to cling to. The heavy dishwasher load that evening simply found the narrowed spot.
Hard water scale and food particles from the disposal added to the buildup. None of these alone would have closed the line quickly; together, over months, they did.
Habits the household adopts afterward
- Pour cooled grease into a can for the trash
- Wipe pans before washing
- Scrape plates into the trash or green waste
- Run plenty of cold water with the disposal
- Note the date in a clog log to see whether it returns
Common questions
Is this based on a real job?
No. It is an invented example to show how a typical kitchen clog is narrowed down and handled.
Would every plumber recommend jetting here?
Not necessarily. Some would cable and monitor; others would suggest jetting for a line that has been slowing. Ask why for your line.
Could this have been a main line problem?
If the bathrooms had backed up too, yes. That check is why the homeowner ran water elsewhere first.
