Common causes of repeat clogs
| Cause | Typical pattern | How it is usually confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Tree roots at joints | Main line clogs every few months; roots on the cable | Camera shows roots at specific joints |
| Grease coating | Kitchen line slows gradually after each cleaning | Cable returns grease; camera shows coated walls |
| Belly or sag | Waste settles at the same spot; water stands in the pipe | Camera shows standing water over a length |
| Offset or broken joint | Paper and wipes snag at one point | Camera shows a lip, gap or break |
| Scale in cast iron | Gradual narrowing of the whole line | Camera shows rough, lumpy walls |
| Flushed wipes or products | Sudden toilet and main clogs | Cable retrieves wipes; habits review |
Why a cable alone keeps you in the loop
A cable is designed to open a path, often only as wide as its cutting head. That restores flow, which is the urgent need, but the roots, grease or scale on the rest of the pipe wall remain. The next load of paper or food finds the same rough spot and the clog builds again.
In Placentia's older housing, the most common long-term causes are roots in clay laterals and scale or corrosion in cast iron. Both are visible on camera. Once you know which you have and where it is, you can choose between scheduled maintenance and a targeted repair.
A sensible path out of repeat clogs
- This clog
- Get the line opened and ask what came back on the cable.
- Same visit or soon after
- Ask for a camera inspection with distances noted and a copy of the video.
- Once you know the cause
- Get written options: periodic cleaning, jetting, spot repair, lining or replacement.
- Before repair work
- Check with the City of Placentia about permits and get a second opinion on any large job.
- Afterward
- Change habits that contribute, such as grease or wipes, and note the date to see whether the pattern changes.
Useful records to keep
- Dates of each clog
- Shows whether the interval is shrinking
- Which fixtures backed up
- Points to the branch or the main
- What the cable retrieved
- Roots, grease, paper or wipes
- Camera video
- Lets any plumber review the same evidence
Questions to ask
- What do you think is causing this to come back?
- Can you show me on camera?
- What would scheduled cleaning involve compared with repair?
- Is the repair on my lateral or at the public connection?
Common questions
Is it normal to need drain cleaning every year?
Some older lines with roots are managed with periodic cleaning by choice. It is not normal for a sound line, so a camera look is worth it.
Will jetting stop repeat clogs?
It can lengthen the time between clogs caused by grease or fine roots. It will not fix a sag, offset or broken pipe.
Could the city sewer be causing my repeat clogs?
It is possible but less common. If neighbors have the same issue, contact the City of Placentia about the public main.
