Three places the color can come from
In an older house the most common source is galvanized steel supply pipe. As the zinc coating wears through, the steel rusts, and loose particles break off whenever water starts moving after sitting still. That is why the first few seconds of water in the morning, or after a trip, are often the worst.
The second source is the water heater. A tank collects sediment and, as it ages, can begin to corrode. If only the hot side runs brown, the heater moves to the top of the list.
The third source is outside the house. Work on public mains, hydrant flushing or a main break can stir up sediment in the street pipes. That usually affects several homes at once and clears within a period the utility can tell you about.
Narrowing it down
Run a few fixtures and note what you see. These patterns point toward a likely source.
- IfOnly the hot water is discoloredThenSuspect the water heater first; ask about flushing it and checking the tank's condition.
- IfHot and cold are both discolored, but only for the first few secondsThenSuspect rusting galvanized pipe inside the house.
- IfWater stays brown at every tap, including the hose bib by the meterThenCheck with neighbors and contact the City of Orange water utility.
- IfOne fixture is discolored and the rest are clearThenSuspect a short galvanized branch or an old fitting serving that fixture.
- IfThe color appeared right after plumbing workThenSediment may have been disturbed; ask the plumber who did the work to flush the lines.
What to do in the meantime
Common causes and the usual next step
| Cause | Typical clue | Usual next step |
|---|---|---|
| Rusting galvanized supply | Both sides tinted after water sits | Pressure and flow test, then section or whole repipe discussion |
| Aging water heater | Hot side only, sometimes with sediment | Flush and inspect the tank and connections |
| Old fitting or short steel branch | One fixture only | Locate and replace the affected section |
| Public main disturbance | Several homes on the block affected | Contact the city water utility |
What to ask a plumber
- Is the discoloration coming from the heater, the supply pipe or both?
- How much galvanized pipe is left, and is it near the end of its life?
- Would flushing help, or would the rust keep returning?
- If a repipe is recommended, can you show me the corroded pipe first?
Common questions
Why is the water worst first thing in the morning?
Overnight, rust particles settle in the pipe. When the first fixture opens, the moving water carries them out. The color usually fades as fresher water flows through.
Can an old water heater make cold water brown?
Normally the heater only affects the hot side. If cold water is discolored too, the supply pipe or the public main is the more likely source.
Does a whole-house filter fix rusty pipe?
A filter can catch particles, but the pipe keeps corroding and narrowing behind it. It may help in the short term while you plan a permanent repair.
