Why the video comes first
A sewer lateral is buried, so every judgment about it rests on what can be seen through a camera. Symptoms in the house, such as slow drains or gurgling toilets, tell you something is wrong but not where or how badly. Two homes on the same Fullerton street can show identical symptoms while one has a single root-filled joint and the other has a cast-iron pipe cracked along its length.
The inspection also gives you something to compare. If you collect more than one quote, each contractor can be asked to explain their recommendation against the same footage. That turns a decision about a buried pipe into a decision about visible defects.
How an inspection usually goes
- Access. The camera goes in through the sewer cleanout, a roof vent or, if there is no cleanout, sometimes a removed toilet.
- Clearing if needed. If the line is blocked, it is usually cleared first so the camera can travel the full length.
- The push.A camera head on a flexible push rod travels toward the city main while a counter records the distance from the entry point.
- Locating.A transmitter in the camera head lets a locator find the pipe's position and depth from the surface at points of interest.
- Review. The plumber walks you through the footage and notes each defect with its distance.
What a useful inspection record includes
- Video of the full run from the entry point to the city main, or to where the camera could not continue
- A visible distance counter throughout the footage
- The pipe material and any changes in material along the run
- Notes or timestamps for each crack, root intrusion, offset, sag or break
- Approximate depth and location of key defects, marked on the ground or a sketch
- The entry point used and whether the line was cleaned first
What the footage often leads to
- IfA clean pipe with a single soft blockageThenCleaning may be all that is needed; ask whether a follow-up check is worth scheduling.
- IfOne defect at one jointThenAsk about a spot repair or short sectional liner instead of a full replacement.
- IfDefects along much of the runThenFull-length lining or bursting usually enters the discussion.
- IfThe camera cannot pass a collapseThenExpect a conversation about excavating that point to see what lies beyond it.
Questions to ask during the review
- What is the pipe made of along the whole run?
- Can you pause on each defect and tell me its distance and depth?
- Did the camera reach the city main?
- Which findings drive your recommendation, and which are minor?
- Would cleaning alone be a reasonable option for now?
Common questions
Can a camera inspection be done during a backup?
Usually the line has to be cleared first, because a camera cannot see through standing sewage. Many inspections happen right after a clog is cleared.
Is a camera inspection the same as a hydrostatic or smoke test?
No. Those are different tests for finding leaks or openings. A camera inspection is the standard first look for trenchless planning.
Does the inspection show the city's side of the line?
The camera may travel past your property line toward the main. Who is responsible for each part is a separate question to check with the City of Fullerton.
