A different starting point

Amerige Heights was developed decades after most of Fullerton's housing, so its homes are far younger than the cast-iron and clay era. Newer residential laterals are typically plastic pipe, which does not scale like cast iron and has far fewer root-prone joints than clay. Full trenchless replacement is therefore much less common here than in older neighborhoods.

That does not mean nothing can go wrong. Blockages from wipes and grease, damage from later digging, settlement and occasional root entry at fittings can still occur. When they do, the usual first step is cleaning and a camera inspection, and a spot repair is more likely than a full replacement.

Newer versus older laterals

Newer plastic laterals

  • No internal corrosion or scale
  • Fewer joints for roots to find
  • Problems are often blockages or localized damage

Older cast-iron or clay

  • Scale, cracks and corrosion over time
  • Many joints where roots enter
  • Full-length lining or bursting more often discussed

If you have sewer symptoms here

  • IfOne backup after heavy useThenAsk for cleaning and a camera check of what caused it.
  • IfCamera shows a single damaged spotThenAsk about a spot repair rather than full replacement.
  • IfSomeone recommends full replacement of a newer lineThenAsk to see exactly what on the video justifies it, and consider a second opinion.

Useful records for a newer home

  • Builder or prior-owner records of the plumbing layout
  • Location of the sewer cleanout
  • Any landscaping or hardscape work done over the sewer route
  • Homeowner association rules that affect yard work, if your community has an association
