Taking the measurements

  1. Rough-in

Measure from the finished wall behind the toilet, not the baseboard, to the center of either bolt cap at the base.

  2. Left and right clearance

Measure from the center of the bolts to the nearest wall, vanity or tub on each side.

  3. Front clearance

Measure from the front edge of the current bowl to the nearest door, vanity or wall.

  4. Valve position

Measure the shutoff valve's height from the floor and its distance from the toilet's centerline.

  5. Tank width and height

Note the tank size, especially if there is a shelf, window or cabinet above or beside it.

Condition notes

These do not change which toilet fits, but they affect the installation.

  • Shutoff valve turns freely and closes fully.
  • Supply line type and condition.
  • Any stains, soft spots or cracked tile around the base.
  • Whether the toilet rocks.
  • Whether new flooring has been added since the toilet was installed, which may mean the flange sits low.

Terms on product sheets

Rough-in
The distance from the wall to the center of the drain. The new toilet must match it.
Comfort or chair height
A taller bowl than a standard model.
Skirted trapway
A smooth base that hides the curve of the trap.
Dual flush
Two buttons or handle positions for a smaller or full flush.

Questions for your plumber or the store

  1. Which models match my rough-in and fit these clearances?
  2. Will the valve position work with the toilet I have chosen?
  3. Are there current efficiency requirements or rebates I should check with the city about?

Common questions

Can I measure the rough-in from the baseboard?

No. Measure from the finished wall surface; baseboards add depth and throw the number off.

What if the two bolts give different readings?

Some toilets are set slightly crooked. Use the average, and mention it to the installer.

Do I need these if a plumber is supplying the toilet?

It still helps, so you can discuss options before the visit.
