The situation

Illustrative example. Not a real job or customer.

A Fullerton homeowner notices a damp line running down the side of the guest bathroom toilet tank. The floor below has a small, steady drip spot, even on dry days.

  1. They dry the tank and shine a flashlight along the damp line, finding a fine crack near the bottom of the tank wall.
  2. They mark the water level in the tank with a pencil and close the supply.
  3. An hour later the level has dropped, with no color moving into the bowl during a dye test.

The tank itself is leaking through the crack, not past the flapper.

What they did

  1. Shut it down

They left the shutoff closed, flushed the tank empty and put a towel down.

  2. Asked about a patch

A licensed plumber explained that sealants on porcelain rarely last and that a crack through the tank can split.

  3. Looked for a matching tank

The model was old and a matching tank was not readily available, so replacing the whole toilet made more sense.

  4. Measured

Using a measuring worksheet, they recorded the rough-in, side clearance and the distance to the door.

  5. Planned the extras

Because the water would be off, they agreed to replace the stiff shutoff valve and the old supply line too.

Their measurements and choices

ItemWhat they found or chose
Rough-inMatched a common size, confirmed at both bolts
Front clearanceTight, so a round bowl was chosen to keep the door clear
HeightComfort height, for the adults who use the room most
Shutoff valveStiff, so replaced at the same time
RebatesThey checked with the city about current programs before buying

What made this a replacement, not a repair

Most toilet problems are part repairs, and a crack is the main exception. Porcelain cannot be reliably mended, and a tank crack can fail suddenly. Once a matching tank was ruled out, the decision was mostly about fit and comfort.

Doing the valve and supply line at the same time avoided shutting the water off twice and left the new toilet with fresh connections.

Common questions

Is this a real job?

No. It is an invented example.

Why not just replace the tank?

A matching tank for this older model was not readily available. When one is, replacing only the tank can be an option.

Why choose a round bowl?

In this example, front clearance was tight and an elongated bowl would have crowded the door.
