Small habits, fewer calls

Most disposal service calls trace back to a few things: something hard or stringy went in, grease built up, or a slow drip went unnoticed under the sink. Regular, low-effort checks catch these early.

Fullerton's hard water also leaves mineral film on sinks and in dishwashers. It is not a major cause of disposal failure, but cleaning the splash guard and sink flange regularly keeps residue from building up where you can see it.

The calendar

Every use
Run cold water before, during and after grinding. Feed scraps a little at a time.
Weekly
With the power off, scrub the underside of the splash guard with soap and a brush.
Weekly
Grind a handful of ice with cold water running to knock residue off the grinding parts.
Monthly
With a flashlight, check the flange, dishwasher hose and drain elbow for damp spots.
Monthly
Note how fast the sink drains with a full bowl; slower than usual is a drain warning.
Every few months
Press the reset button to confirm it is in, and make sure the hex key is still under the sink.
Yearly
Test the angle stops and main shutoff, and look at the dishwasher hose for cracks or kinks.
Yearly
Check the cabinet floor for swelling or stains that suggest a past leak.

Common questions

Does grinding ice sharpen the blades?

Disposals do not have sharp blades. Ice helps knock residue off the grinding parts and chamber.

How often should I clean the splash guard?

Weekly is a good habit, and right away if you notice a smell.

Do I need a professional tune-up?

Disposals do not usually need routine professional service. Call when a check shows a problem.
