The two side connections
Near the top of the disposal's side is a small inlet nipple where the dishwasher drain hose attaches with a clamp. Lower down, the drain elbow, a short bent pipe, bolts to the disposal through a rubber gasket and leads into the sink trap.
The dishwasher connection leaks when the clamp loosens, the hose end cracks, or the hose has been kinked and split. The elbow leaks when its gasket flattens or hardens with age, or its bolts work loose from vibration. Both kinds of leak often show up only when water is actually flowing: the dishwasher draining, or the sink emptying.
Find which one is leaking
Power off
Turn the disposal off and unplug it or switch off its breaker before reaching under the sink.
Dry and wrap
Dry both connections and wrap each one loosely with a strip of paper towel.
Run the sink
Run water down the drain for a minute and check which paper strip gets wet.
Run a dishwasher drain
If both stay dry, start a short dishwasher cycle and check again when it drains.
Symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wet only when the dishwasher drains | Loose clamp or split hose end | Tighten clamp or trim and reconnect hose |
| Wet when the sink drains | Drain elbow gasket or loose bolts | New gasket, retighten flange bolts |
| Hose wet along its length | Cracked or kinked dishwasher hose | Replace the hose |
| Elbow cracked or corroded | Damaged elbow | Replace elbow and gasket |
DIY tighten or call?
- IfA hose clamp is visibly loose and the hose is in good shapeSnugging the clamp with the power off may solve it. Test again with a dishwasher drain.
- IfThe hose is brittle, split or kinkedHave the hose replaced; patching rarely lasts.
- IfThe elbow leaks after tightening its boltsThe gasket needs replacing. Call a licensed plumber.
- IfThere is water but you cannot find the sourceStop using the disposal and have it inspected; it may be internal.
What drives the cost
Side-connection repairs are usually among the smaller disposal jobs, because the unit stays in place. The price rises if the drain elbow or trap is corroded and has to be replaced, if the dishwasher hose has to be rerouted, or if the leak has damaged the cabinet. Ask what parts are included in the written price.
Questions to ask
- Which connection was leaking, and why?
- Did you replace the gasket or just tighten it?
- Is the dishwasher hose routed correctly with an air gap or high loop?
- Is the trap below the elbow in good condition?
Common questions
Why does it only leak when the dishwasher runs?
The dishwasher pumps water under some pressure through its hose. A slightly loose clamp may only drip during that surge.
Can I use tape or sealant on the elbow?
Tape and sealant are not a substitute for a good gasket. A worn gasket should be replaced.
Do I need to replace the disposal for a side leak?
Usually not. Side leaks are typically at removable connections, not in the unit itself.
