Compare what is included, not just the total
One estimate might include a new sink flange, a power cord, drain adjustments and haul-away. Another might list only the unit and labor. The lower total is not always the lower cost once the missing pieces are added back.
Ask each contractor to break the price into the same lines. Then fill in this worksheet so the differences are easy to see.

Questions to fill the gaps
- Is the unit a similar size and outlet height to the old one?
- What happens to the price if the drain needs changes?
- Is the dishwasher connection tested before you leave?
- Is anything excluded, such as cabinet repair or electrical work?
- Who is doing the work: an employee or a subcontractor?
Reading the results
- IfOne estimate is much lower and leaves out several linesAsk that contractor to price the missing lines before comparing.
- IfBoth recommend replacement for different reasonsAsk each to explain the diagnosis; agreement on the cause is reassuring.
- IfOne recommends drain cleaning instead of a new unitAsk the other whether they checked the drain. The disposal may not be the problem.
- IfThe units differ in size or featuresCompare the units separately from the installation.
Things that commonly change the total
- Unit choice
- Motor size, insulation and features
- Drain fit
- Outlet height that does not match the trap
- Electrical
- Hardwired units or new outlets
- Condition
- Corroded traps, stuck valves, damaged flanges
Common questions
Is it rude to ask for an itemized estimate?
No. It is a normal request and makes comparison fair for everyone.
What if an estimate changes during the job?
Ask for the change and the reason in writing before the added work starts.
Should the permit be on the estimate?
If the job needs one, it is useful to see who is pulling it and how it is handled. Check with the city if unsure.
