Three groups

Some problems you can safely check yourself with the power off: a simple jam, a tripped reset, a smelly splash guard. Some can wait a few days if you stop using the disposal, like a worn-out unit you plan to replace. And some need a plumber soon because water or electricity is involved, or because the drain is backing up.

This guide is not a substitute for judgment. If you are unsure, treat the problem as the more serious group, cut the power, and call a licensed plumber.

While you wait for a plumber

  • Keep the disposal unplugged or its breaker off.
  • Keep a pan and towels under the unit.
  • Use the other sink bowl only if it drains separately and is not backing up.
  • Avoid running the dishwasher if it drains into the disposal.
  • Note what happened in the symptom log.

Questions to ask when you call

  1. Based on what I described, is this repair or replacement likely?
  2. Should I keep anything off until you arrive?
  3. How is the visit priced?
  4. What is your CSLB license number?

Common questions

Is a leaking disposal an emergency?

It is urgent rather than an emergency if you can cut the power and stop the water. Stop using the sink and have it fixed soon.

Can I keep using a disposal that hums now and then?

Repeated stalls can damage the motor. Clear the jam and change what goes in; call if it keeps happening.

What if I cannot turn off the water?

Close the main shutoff for the house and call a licensed plumber.
