Listen first, then switch off
Noise is often the first sign of trouble, and it is useful because different sounds point to different causes. Pay attention to when it happens: only while food is going in, all the time, only at startup, or after the water is turned off.
As soon as you hear something unusual, turn the disposal off. Running it with a spoon or a piece of glass inside can damage the grinding parts, and it can throw fragments around the chamber.
What the sound usually means
| Sound | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Sharp metal grinding | Utensil, coin or bottle cap in the chamber | Power off, remove with tongs |
| Rattling or clanking | Loose object, or the unit loose on its mount | Power off, check the chamber and the mount |
| High squeal or whine | Worn motor bearings | Usually means replacement |
| Clicking at startup | Something light caught on the turntable | Power off and inspect |
| Loud vibration, cabinet shakes | Loose mounting ring or unbalanced turntable | Have the mount checked |
| Hum without spinning | Jam | See the humming guide |
Safe inspection
Switch off and unplug
Turn off the switch, then unplug or switch off the breaker.
Look inside
Use a flashlight to check the chamber. Remove anything that is not food with tongs or pliers.
Check the mount
Gently try to rotate the unit by hand from below. It should feel locked to the sink, not loose.
Turn the flywheel
Use the hex key underneath to turn the flywheel and feel for grinding or catching.
Test briefly
Restore power and run cold water with the disposal for a few seconds. If the noise is still there, switch off and call.
Repairable or worn out?
- IfThe noise stopped after removing an objectProblem solved. Watch for leaks or new noises in the next few uses.
- IfThe unit is loose on its mountA plumber can retighten or replace the mounting ring, often without replacing the disposal.
- IfThere is a steady squeal or bearing whineBearings are inside the sealed unit; replacement is usually the answer.
- IfThe grinding ring or lugs are damagedAsk whether repair is practical on this unit or whether replacement is better value.
What drives the cost
Removing an object or retightening a mount is a small job. Worn bearings, a bent lug or a cracked chamber usually lead to replacement, and then the cost depends on the unit you choose and what the installation involves. Ask for the cause and the price in writing.
Questions to ask
- What caused the noise?
- Was there any damage to the grinding parts?
- Is the mounting ring secure?
- Is this unit worth keeping, or is it near the end?
Common questions
Is a loud disposal always a problem?
Some units are simply louder than others. A change in sound, or metal-on-metal noise, is what to watch for.
Can a disposal noise come from the drain?
Gurgling usually comes from the drain or venting, not the disposal. Mechanical noises come from the unit.
Will a quieter unit fix a vibrating cabinet?
If the vibration is from a loose mount, tightening the mount is the fix. A better-insulated unit can reduce noise in general.
