The neighborhood
Amerige Heights is a master-planned neighborhood in west Fullerton, developed largely in the 2000s with single-family homes, townhomes and a town center. Compared with Fullerton's postwar tracts, the plumbing here is much newer, and drain lines are more likely to be plastic than cast iron. Confirm your own home's materials with its records or a plumber.
Because many homes went up around the same time, many original kitchen fixtures, including disposals, have reached a similar age. A wave of replacements across a neighborhood is common when builder-installed appliances wear out.

Common situations in newer homes
- IfThe original disposal hums, leaks from the bottom or is very loudReplacement is often the practical answer at this age.
- IfThe disposal runs but the sink is slowCheck the trap first; newer lines clog less often from roughness, but grease still builds up.
- IfYou want a quieter or stronger unitMeasure the cabinet and drain height before buying.
- IfYour home is part of an HOAInterior plumbing is usually yours, but check your HOA documents for any shared lines.
Before replacing an original unit
- Photograph the label and note the model.
- Check whether it is plug-in or hardwired.
- Confirm whether the dishwasher drains into it.
- Use the measuring worksheet to check fit.
- Ask for the unit, parts and labor priced separately.
Trees and laterals
Street trees here are younger than in Fullerton's older neighborhoods, and newer sewer laterals are generally less vulnerable to roots than old clay pipe. That does not make roots impossible, but in a home of this age, a single slow kitchen sink is much more likely to be a trap or kitchen-line clog.

Some do. Check your HOA documents or ask a plumber before work that affects shared lines.
Are permits needed for a disposal swap here?
Check with the City of Fullerton, especially if electrical changes are involved.
