Lateral problems usually build slowly. A tub drains a little slower after laundry, a toilet gurgles now and then, a smell shows up near the front planter after a long weekend. Each event seems minor, so it gets forgotten.

Writing each one down takes seconds. After a few weeks the log shows whether the trouble involves one fixture or many, whether it follows heavy water use, and whether it is getting more frequent. That is exactly what a plumber will ask on the first call.

Reading your own log

  • IfEvery entry is the same single sinkThenIt is probably that fixture's branch line, not the lateral.
  • IfEntries involve several fixtures after laundry or showersThenThe main line is likely partly blocked; plan a cleaning and camera inspection.
  • IfEvents are getting closer togetherThenDo not wait for a full backup; book a plumber now.
  • IfOutdoor smell or soggy lawn entries appearThenMention a possible lateral leak when you call.

Also note once, at the top of the log

  • Approximate year the house was built
  • Whether the sewer line has ever been replaced or lined
  • Location of the outdoor cleanout
  • Large trees between the house and the street
  • Dates of past drain cleanings and what was found

Common questions

How long should I keep the log before calling?

Do not wait if water is rising in fixtures. The log is for slow, recurring symptoms; a backup needs action right away.

Does a plumber really want this?

A clear history helps them decide whether to start with a local clog or the main line, and whether a camera inspection makes sense.

Should I log things after a repair?

Yes. A short log after any cleaning or repair shows whether the fix held.
