What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license?

Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Confirm the name, the status and the classification match the company you are talking to.

What if someone pushes full replacement right away?

Ask to see the camera footage and where the defects are by distance. If the damage is in one spot, ask why a spot repair or lining would not work, and get a second opinion.

What should a written estimate include?

The method, the length of pipe, the pipe material, who handles permits, how the yard or concrete will be restored, and whether a final camera run is included.

Who pulls the permits?

Ask before signing. Work in the street or parkway generally needs city approval, and the contractor normally applies. Check with the city if you are unsure.

Should I worry about a gas line near the dig?

Before any digging, underground utilities should be marked. If you ever smell gas, leave the property and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside.

Can I get a second opinion on footage?

Yes. A copy of the video lets another licensed plumber review the same defects without running a new inspection.
