Morning of
Walk the route with the crew lead and confirm where pits or the trench will go.
Before backfill
Ask to see the final camera run, or get the video.

Clear the way

  • Cleanout uncovered and reachable
  • Driveway and parking cleared if equipment needs them
  • Gate codes, keys or side-yard access arranged
  • Fragile plants along the route moved or marked
  • Sprinkler zones near the work turned off

People, pets and water

  • Children and pets kept away from open pits, trenches and any sewage
  • Household told when drains cannot be used
  • Alternative bathroom plan for the hours the line is out of service
  • Laundry and dishes done the day before
  • Contact number for the crew lead written down

Confirm on the morning of the work

  1. Have underground utilities been marked?
  2. Where exactly will the pits or trench be?
  3. How long will the sewer be out of service?
  4. How will the site be secured overnight if work runs long?
  5. When will any city inspection happen, if required?

After the crew leaves

Run water in a few fixtures and listen for gurgling. Walk the work area and compare it with what the scope said about restoration. Save the final video, the invoice and any permit sign-off together with your sewer line map.

For the first few weeks, keep a short note in your symptom log. A clean record after the repair is useful if questions come up later.

Common questions

Can I stay home during a sewer repair?

Usually yes, but plan for periods with no drain use and noise from equipment. Ask the crew for the expected schedule.

Who marks the utilities?

Utility locating must happen before excavation. Ask your contractor how it is being arranged for your job.

What if the crew finds more damage than expected?

Ask them to stop, show you, and put any change in writing before continuing.
