A cable machine, often called a snake or rooter, spins a steel cable with a cutting head through the line. It is good at opening a blockage quickly and pulling back a sample of what caused it: roots, paper, grease or bits of pipe.

A hydro jetter pushes a hose with a nozzle that sprays water backward and sideways at high pressure. The jets pull the hose forward and scour grease, scale and fine roots off the pipe walls, then flush the debris downstream. It cleans more of the pipe's circumference than a cable, which can make a camera inspection afterward much clearer.

Which one fits your situation

  • IfThe house is backed up right now and nothing drainsThenA cable is often used first to restore flow quickly.
  • IfGrease or scale keeps narrowing the lineThenJetting cleans the walls more thoroughly.
  • IfYou need clear footage for a repair decisionThenCleaning, often by jetting, before the camera run gives a better picture.
  • IfThe camera shows a collapse or missing pipeThenNeither method will fix it; plan a repair instead of repeated cleaning.

Before any cleaning visit

  • Know where your outdoor cleanout is and keep it clear
  • Stop running water in the house until the plumber arrives
  • Ask whether a camera inspection is included or separate
  • Ask what came out of the line and where it was hit
  • Keep a note of the date and findings for next time

Common questions

Is hydro jetting always better than snaking?

No. Jetting cleans more thoroughly, but a cable is often faster for an emergency blockage and safer in a fragile pipe.

How often should a lateral be cleaned?

There is no single schedule. A line with known roots or a belly may need periodic cleaning until it is repaired; a sound line may never need it.

Will jetting damage a new plastic pipe?

Properly used jetting is generally suitable for sound modern pipe. Ask the plumber about the equipment and settings they use.
