Where to keep it

In most La Habra houses, the garage is the best spot: it is usually near the water heater, close to the main shutoff and easy to reach without walking through the house. In an apartment or condo, a hall closet near the kitchen works well.

Label the bin clearly and tell everyone in the household where it is. A kit nobody remembers is no help at two in the morning.

  3. Update contacts.Confirm the water utility number on your latest bill and your insurer's claim line.
  4. Restock.Replace towels, gloves or bags that were used.

Questions to ask a plumber on a routine visit

  1. Is my main shutoff reliable, or should it be replaced?
  2. Would an extra shutoff in the garage make emergencies easier?
  3. Are my supply hoses to the toilets, sinks and washer due for replacement?

Common questions

Where can I get a meter key?

They are sold at most hardware stores. Make sure the key fits the type of valve in your meter box.

Do I need a wet vacuum?

It helps with larger spills of clean water. Do not use a household vacuum on sewage.

Should renters keep a kit?

Yes, a basic one. Renters should also know who to call at the property and where the unit's shutoff is.
