Why emergency visits are priced differently
Plumbing companies that answer calls at night, on weekends and on holidays have to keep people and equipment ready outside normal hours. Many charge differently for those visits, and the way they do it varies: some use a separate trip or dispatch charge, some a different hourly rate, some a flat price for the task.
We do not publish prices on this preview site, and this page cannot tell you what any particular company charges. What it can do is help you understand the parts of the bill so you can ask about each one before anyone starts working.
Common cost drivers
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Time of the call | Nights, weekends and holidays are often priced differently from regular hours |
| Diagnosis | Leak detection or a sewer camera adds time and equipment |
| Access | Opening drywall, flooring, a slab or digging in the yard |
| Parts and materials | Pipe type, fittings, valves or a whole water heater |
| Equipment | Drain machines, jetters and locating gear |
| Permits | Some repairs need a city permit; check with the city |
| Restoration | Drywall, flooring and paint are often separate from the plumbing |
Keeping the bill predictable
- Ask how the visit is charged before dispatch.Ask whether there is a trip charge, how labor is counted and whether diagnosis is billed separately.
- Get the repair price in writing first.Once the cause is found, ask for the price of the repair in writing before work begins.
- Separate tonight from later.Ask for the temporary fix and the permanent repair to be priced separately so you can choose.
- Keep the invoice. It should list the work done, parts used and the contractor's CSLB license number.

Questions to ask on the phone

- Is diagnosis included or separate?
- Will I get the repair price in writing before you start?
- Do you offer a temporary fix tonight and a quote for the full repair later?
Common questions
Why won't anyone give me a price over the phone?
Many problems cannot be priced until the cause is found. You can still ask how the visit and diagnosis are charged before anyone is sent.
Is a flat-rate price better than hourly?
Each has trade-offs. A flat rate gives certainty for a defined task, while hourly can work out either way. Ask what exactly is included.
Will my insurance pay the plumber?
Some policies cover resulting water damage but not the repair of the pipe itself. Check with your insurer.
