What to ask, and why
How do I check a plumber's license?
Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The name on the record should match the company, and the license should show as active.
How do I avoid surprise charges at 2 a.m.?
Ask how after-hours visits are charged before anyone heads your way. Get the repair price in writing before work starts, with the temporary fix and the permanent repair listed separately.
Do I have to approve the full repair tonight?
No. Have the problem made safe now and the rest quoted for later. On big jobs like repiping or a new sewer line, get a second opinion in daylight.
Will insurance cover the damage?
Your policy decides that. Photograph everything before cleanup, keep the invoice that names the cause and call your insurer to ask.
Can we stay in the house with sewage on the floor?
Keep people and pets out of the affected rooms, use no water anywhere in the house and wear gloves if you have to touch anything. Sewage carries germs, and soaked carpet and drywall usually need professional cleanup.
Who will show up at my door?
Ask whether the plumber is an employee of the licensed contractor or a subcontractor, and whose license covers the work. While this site is in preview, our request form is not connected to a destination, so submitting it sends nobody.
