Minute by minute
A rough order of priorities. Skip anything that is not safe for you to do.
- First 2 minutes
- Close the main water shutoff. If you cannot find it, close the valve at the meter box by the curb.
- Next 5 minutes
- Check for water near outlets, lights or the electrical panel. Stay out of standing water that might be in contact with electricity.
- Next 10 minutes
- Open the lowest faucet in the house to drain the lines, and turn the water heater to pilot or switch off its breaker.
- Next 20 minutes
- Move furniture, rugs, electronics and papers out of the wet area. Mop or towel up what you can.
- By the end of the hour
- Photograph the pipe, the damage and any wet ceilings or walls, then call a licensed plumber and, if needed, your insurer.
Why pipes burst in La Habra homes
Hard freezes are rare in La Habra, so most bursts here are not from frozen pipes. They usually come from age and wear: older copper lines thinned by hard water and decades of use, galvanized steel corroding from the inside, or a failed connector to a toilet, faucet, washing machine or water heater.
A burst can also start small. A pinhole leak sprays inside a wall for days before the drywall gives way, or a braided supply hose under a sink fails all at once. Sudden pressure changes, a stuck pressure regulator or physical damage during other work can also open a line.
Where is the water coming from?
- IfA supply hose to a toilet, sink or washer has splitThenClose the small valve behind that fixture. If it holds, the rest of the house can stay on until a plumber replaces the hose.
- IfWater is spraying from a pipe in a wall or cabinetThenClose the main. This needs a pipe repair, not just a fixture valve.
- IfWater is coming through a ceilingThenClose the main and stay away from wet light fixtures. See the ceiling leak guide for what to do next.
- IfWater is rising from the floor with nothing visibleThenClose the main and ask about a slab leak. The break may be under the concrete.
Photos and notes to keep
- The broken pipe or fitting, close up and from a distance.
- Every wet room, including ceilings, baseboards and the bottoms of cabinets.
- Damaged belongings, before you throw anything away.
- The time you noticed the leak and when you shut the water off.
- The plumber's written invoice describing the cause and the repair.
What to ask the plumber who comes out
- What failed, and is the rest of this line in similar condition?
- Can you repair just this section tonight and quote any larger work separately?
- Will you need to open drywall or the floor, and who closes it up afterward?
- Is this a one-off failure or a sign the house may need repiping?
Common questions
Should I call a water damage company or a plumber first?
A plumber first, so the source is repaired and the water can be turned back on safely. Drying and restoration usually come after, and your insurer may have its own process.
Can I turn the water back on after a burst?
Only after the broken section is repaired or capped. If the break is on one fixture, you may be able to isolate it with that fixture's valve and restore water to the rest of the house.
Do frozen pipes happen in La Habra?
Rarely. Most bursts here come from aging pipe, corrosion or a failed connector rather than freezing.
