Why a log helps
Most shower and tub leaks only appear under certain conditions: a deep bath, a long shower, the drain opening, or nothing at all because the leak is under constant pressure. The timing is the clue, and it is easy to forget which shower came before which drip.
Keep this log for three to seven days. Write an entry every time the bathroom is used and every time you check the stain, wall or floor. Bring it, with photos, to anyone you ask to look at the problem.
Daily log
| Date and time | What was used | How long or how full | What you saw below or behind | Meter moving with all off? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shower / bath / tub drained / toilet / sink | Yes / No | |||
How to keep the log
- Mark the stain.Lightly pencil the outline of any stain on the first day, and date it. Re-mark after each check.
- Use one fixture at a time.Where you can, avoid using the shower and the tub on the same day so each entry points to one fixture.
- Check twice.Look below or behind right after use, and again an hour later. Slow leaks often show up late.
- Read the meter overnight.Note the meter reading at bedtime and first thing in the morning before anyone uses water.
Also note once
- Age of the bathroom, if you know when it was last remodeled
- Valve style: one handle, two handles or three
- Whether there is an access panel behind the shower
- Whether the bathroom is upstairs or on a slab floor
- Any recent plumbing work in the house
- Photos of the handle, trim, spout and any brand markings
What the log usually reveals
- Leak with nothing running
- Pressurized supply or valve
- Leak after showers only
- Arm, head, grout, caulk or drain
- Leak after deep baths only
- Overflow gasket
- Leak whenever the tub drains
- Drain shoe or drain seal
Common questions
How many days should I log?
Three days is often enough for a regular leak. Keep going up to a week if the leak is occasional.
What if nothing shows up while I'm logging?
That is useful too. Note it, and try a deliberate test such as a full bath while someone watches below.
Should I keep using the shower during the log?
Only if the leak is minor and nothing is sagging or near electrical fixtures.
