What to ask, and why

How do I check a plumber's license?

Ask for the CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. Check that it's active and that the name matches the business you're talking to.

Someone wants to rip out the whole shower. Do I need that?

Ask what they tested and what it showed. A failed pan can justify a tear-out. A dripping valve or a leaking overflow usually doesn't. Get a second opinion on any big job.

Who fixes the drywall and tile after a wall is opened?

Settle it before work starts. Some plumbers patch, many don't, and tile matching is often a separate trade. Put the scope in writing so you know what stays open.

The leak already caused mold. Now what?

Stop the leak, then dry the area. For mold that's spread or keeps coming back, bring in a mold specialist and ask your insurer about water damage.

Does a valve replacement need a permit?

It depends on the work. Check with the City of Fullerton for your address, and ask the plumber whether they'll pull one.

How do I compare two quotes?

Line up the same repair in each: the part, whether a wall or floor opens, and who restores the finish. Get every price in writing before work starts.
